The Disciplined Child

Inspiration: Morning Blues

It was a Monday morning in Emerald city. The sun was just peering over the horizon as Grandma shouted at Alex from the kitchen to get up for school.

Being a Monday morning Alex pulled the sheets back over his head and proceeded to go back to sleep. Grandma explained, “It’s six o’clock, please wake up, the bus comes at seven and you don’t want to miss it.” Alex continued to sleep. Fifteen more minutes went by then Grandma walked up to his room, ripped the sheets off, and yelled at Alex to get up. “You do this every morning!” she screamed. “You need to start waking up on your own and show some responsibility.”

After five more minutes of screaming, Alex grudgingly got out of bed and lazily walked over to the bathroom to start getting ready for school. The bus driver was honking outside as Grandma ran out and requested that he waited two minutes for her grandson. She quickly helped Alex finish getting ready for school and got him onto the bus before it left.

Once Alex left, Grandma realized something needed to be done. She was worried about Alex and how his future would turn out if she didn’t discipline him now. As Alex was at school, Grandma decided that she was not going to wake him up anymore. For him to learn, he must experience consequences.

Later that day Alex came home from school and went right to playing with his toys. “Stop playing with your toys and do your homework,” Grandma explained. Alex heard this and replied, “I’ll do them later.” Time went by and after a lot of yelling, she finally got Alex to do his homework.

The next morning at 6 o’clock Grandma did not yell at Alex to get up. She just sat down in the kitchen and made herself some breakfast. Then seven o’clock came around and the bus was honking outside while Alex was still sound asleep. Grandma went out to the bus, but to the driver’s surprise, she told him to leave.

Finally, the clock hit nine, and Alex finally woke up. He checked the time and immediately jumped out of bed in a panic. He went straight down the stairs and cried out “Grandma! Why didn’t you wake me up for school? The school bus has already left and I’m going to be late!” He couldn’t stop crying. “I have a math test today and Ms. Teacher is going to punish me for missing her class and test. Why didn’t you wake me up?”

Alex became more scared and tense “What do I do know? Please help, I promise I will wake up every day on time for school if you talk to Ms. Teacher and excuse me from class.” he said weepingly. As Grandma informed Alex that she had already talked to Ms. Teacher about moving the test to another day, she thought to herself “I think he’s learned his lesson.”

Alex wiped the tears from his face, jumped at Grandma, and hugged her. He thanked her then ran upstairs to get ready for school. When he got home from school Alex didn’t go play with his toys but instead went straight upstairs and completed his homework. And the next morning, Alex woke up to his alarm, got ready, and went to school.
